I'm known for discipline. I've trained almost every day since I was 15. I start each day with prayer and an hour in the gym. So it might surprise you that I'm writing about rest.
But here's the truth: you can't solve high-level problems on a tired mind. Rest isn't the opposite of discipline. It's part of it.
Protect the energy it takes to build what you're building.
Hustle without rest is a slow leak
Plenty of founders wear exhaustion like a badge. I understand it. In my early days I stayed up all night launching products, failing, and trying again. That season taught me a lot. But it also taught me that a mind running on empty makes worse decisions, misses obvious problems, and treats every small issue like an emergency.
The goal isn't to work less. The goal is to do your best work when it matters, and you can't do that while running on fumes.
Rest is a biblical principle
God rested on the seventh day, not because He was tired, but to set a pattern. The Sabbath is a reminder that the work doesn't depend entirely on you. Stepping back on purpose is an act of trust as much as an act of recovery.
What real rest looks like
Scrolling for an hour isn't rest. Neither is a night out that costs you the next morning. Real rest restores your mind, body, and spirit:
- Sleep well — It's the most underrated performance tool there is.
- Move your body — Training clears your mind. Even a long walk counts. During my hardest season, a two-mile walk to the gym five days a week was what kept me going.
- Protect your mind — Be careful what you watch, listen to, and let into your head.
- Time with God — Prayer, reading, and quiet reset your perspective.
- Time with people who fill you up — Family and friends who strengthen you, not drain you.
Guard your focus by subtracting
A lot of exhaustion doesn't come from work. It comes from everything around the work. I use an exercise I call Add and Subtract. Look at every area of your life: faith, health, business, relationships, and time. Ask two questions. What do I need to add to reach my vision? What do I need to subtract?
For me, subtracting alcohol and other distractions has been a major part of my clarity. While others are recovering, you can be building. That's a personal conviction, not a judgment. But almost everyone has something draining their energy that they'd be better off without.
Build rest into your system
- Plan tomorrow tonight — Writing your list before bed lets your mind stop carrying it.
- Set a hard stop — Decide when the workday ends, and keep it.
- Schedule a weekly reset — One day, or part of one, with no work.
- Delegate — If you can't rest because everything depends on you, you have a management problem, not a rest problem.
- Fast and pray in hard seasons — It quiets the noise and sharpens focus. Talk to a doctor first if you have health concerns.
Try this
This week, identify your biggest energy drain and remove it for 30 days. Then add one form of real rest. Notice how your energy, clarity, and productivity change. Rested builders build better.
